DCLG

Communities and Local Government (CLG) is the central government department responsible for policy on local government, housing, urban regeneration, planning, fire and rescue, and race equality and community cohesion issues in England.
It seeks to create thriving, sustainable, vibrant communities that improve everyone’s quality of life.
As the lead government department on cities and urban policy it sees the Shanghai Expo as a unique occasion to showcase the achievements of UK cities in urban regeneration and housing renewal and to demonstrate their economic dynamism, creativity, diversity and innovation.
The Expo is also an opportunity to highlight the contribution of UK cities to tackling global challenges such as sustainable development including climate change.
The Expo theme “Better City, Better Life” is one where the UK has much experience and expertise to offer. The UK was the world’s first industrial nation, and its cities were the first to become specialist industrial centres. They were also the first to de-industrialise and move away from manufacturing towards a service based economy. More recently they have become leaders in the global knowledge-based economy.
The UK Department for Communities and Local Government is organising a range of Expo events, including summits, workshops and master classes, to show the relevance of the UK’s urban renaissance to the rest of the world and the lessons emerging from this. They will be undertaken in partnership with the cities themselves and other key partners within and outside central government.
The events will cover a range of themes including the regeneration of older industrial cities, the role of cities in the knowledge economy, and in promoting openness, diversity and supporting sustainable development. An important topic will be to look at how UK cities are building stronger business and trade links with cities in China, and other emerging economies, to support jobs and economic growth strategies.
The results of the UK-China Sustainable Urban Development Dialogue, which has involved case studies of Sheffield and Glasgow in the UK and Nanjing and Wuhan in China, will also be presented at an Expo event.
