GKN is a global engineering business serving mainly the automotive, industrial, off-highway and aerospace markets.

The story of GKN began in 1759 when the Dowlais Iron Company was set up in the village of Dowlais in South Wales. Through various mergers during the following 150 years, by the start of the 20th century the company had become Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds and was one of the largest manufacturing businesses in the world. In 2009, GKN was proud to celebrate its “250th” anniversary.

The bulk of our sales are made to vehicle and aircraft manufacturers as well as, in Aerospace, to other major tier one suppliers. We operate in four different business areas:

Automotive

Automotive activities comprise GKN Driveline and Other Automotive companies which supply driveshafts, geared components, torque management devices, structural and engine components and substrates for catalytic converters, largely to vehicle manufacturers in the global car and light vehicle markets.

Powder Metallurgy

Powder Metallurgy produces powdered metal and sintered components for automotive and other industrial customers.

OffHighway

OffHighway mainly designs and manufactures steel wheels and driveline products for the agricultural, construction and mining, and industrial machinery markets.

Aerospace

Aerospace activities are focused on military and commercial airframe and engine structures, aircraft cockpit and cabin windows, and specialist areas such as ice protection, fuel systems and emergency flotation.  GKN Aerospace is a major supplier and strategic partner to all the prime US and European airframe and aero-engine manufacturers.

Following the Sichuan Earthquake in 2008, GKN committed funding for the rebuilding of a school in Liangping Town, Sichuan Province, which had been completely destroyed. The “GKN Hope School” was officially opened in July 2009.

In 2009, GKN launched a Student Sponsorship Programme, to support financially underprivileged and talented students attending Engineering Schools of Universities close to GKN plants.

“In September 2009, GKN celebrated its 250th anniversary making it one of the world’s oldest engineering companies. During that time GKN has seen many technology innovations, industrial cycles and the emergence of new markets. One such new market was China and, twenty years ago, GKN was the first automotive supplier to invest in the country. Today, GKN employs over 3500 people in China and is committed to a strategy of long term growth and investment. It is with great pride and pleasure that GKN is sponsoring the Shanghai Expo, which we hope will provide us with a unique opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to China and the city of Shanghai”. Sir Kevin Smith CBE, Chief Executive, GKN
